Possible Causes

Shorted compressor windings, Failing inverter power module (IPM), Loose power connections at outdoor terminal block, Blocked condenser coil causing high amp draw

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: This is a high-voltage, high-current fault. Turn off the outdoor disconnect and lock it out if possible. Do not remove compressor or inverter covers with power applied.

Steps to try:

  • Visual inspection: Remove the outdoor unit service panel. Check for burnt wiring, melted connectors, or a burnt smell near the compressor or inverter module.
  • Tighten terminals: With power OFF, gently tighten the line voltage terminal screws and compressor contact lugs using an insulated screwdriver. Do not overtighten.
  • Clean condenser coil: Ensure the outdoor coil is clean and unobstructed to reduce compressor load.
  • Restart test: Restore power and run the unit. If E5 reappears quickly, shut it down to prevent further damage.

When to call a pro: Overcurrent faults usually require a technician to test compressor windings, measure running current, and evaluate the inverter PCB.
