Rheem mini‑split shows E5 and the outdoor unit does not start or stops shortly after starting.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: This fault involves high current and high voltage. Turn OFF the breaker and outdoor disconnect. Only proceed with basic visual checks unless you are trained.
- Visual inspection: Remove the outdoor panel. Look for burnt wiring, melted connectors, or scorch marks on the outdoor control board and compressor terminals.
- Check fan operation: Ensure the outdoor fan spins freely by hand. A seized fan motor can increase current draw. If stiff or noisy, the fan motor may need replacement.
- Verify supply voltage: With a multimeter and power restored (if you are qualified), confirm that line voltage matches the Rheem nameplate rating. Low or high voltage can trigger E5.
- Compressor test (advanced): With power off and wires removed from compressor terminals, measure resistance between terminals and to ground. Very low resistance or any continuity to ground indicates a shorted compressor.
- Next steps: If wiring and fan are good, E5 usually indicates a failing compressor or inverter module. These require a licensed HVAC technician for diagnosis and replacement.
Warning: Do not bypass overloads or fuses. Doing so can cause fire or catastrophic compressor failure.
