Possible Causes
Failed outdoor air thermistor, Sensor exposed to direct sunlight or heat source, Damaged sensor wiring, Faulty outdoor PCB sensor circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the outdoor disconnect and breaker.
- Find the sensor: The outdoor ambient sensor is typically mounted near the outdoor coil or on the control panel bracket, exposed to outside air.
- Check mounting location: Ensure it is not touching hot discharge lines or in direct sunlight. Relocate to a shaded, free-air location if improperly placed.
- Inspect and test: Check wiring for damage. Disconnect and measure resistance, comparing to Rheem’s ambient temperature chart. Replace if defective.
- Secure wiring: Reattach the sensor firmly and route wires away from sharp edges and moving parts.
Warning: Do not relocate the sensor far from its designed position without following Rheem’s guidelines, as it affects system logic.
