Possible Causes
Dirty condenser coil, Low refrigerant charge causing high superheat, Restricted liquid line filter-drier, Failed discharge temperature sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the outdoor disconnect before cleaning or opening panels. Refrigerant diagnostics must be done by a licensed technician.
- Step 1 – Clean condenser coil: Remove debris and rinse the coil thoroughly from inside out with a garden hose. Allow to dry and restore power.
- Step 2 – Check outdoor fan operation: Confirm the Ruud condenser fan starts promptly and runs at full speed. A weak or non-running fan will cause high discharge temperatures.
- Step 3 – Inspect discharge sensor: Locate the discharge line thermistor near the compressor outlet. Ensure it is firmly attached and insulated as designed. Check for damaged wires.
- Step 4 – Technician checks: If E8 recurs, a technician should check refrigerant charge, superheat/subcooling, and the filter-drier for restriction. They may replace the discharge sensor if readings are abnormal.
