Possible Causes
Corrupted control board firmware, Power surge damage, Failed control board EEPROM, Loose board connectors
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off all power to the indoor and outdoor units before touching control boards.
- Step 1 – Power reset: Turn off the indoor air handler/furnace breaker and outdoor disconnect. Wait at least 5 minutes, then restore power. This can clear transient memory faults.
- Step 2 – Inspect board connections: Remove the control panel cover and gently press on all multi-pin connectors to ensure they are fully seated. Look for corrosion or bent pins.
- Step 3 – Surge damage check: Look for burn marks, swollen components, or a burnt smell on the Ruud control board. If present, the board must be replaced.
- Step 4 – Firmware/board replacement: If E9 persists after a power reset and connections are good, the control board’s EEPROM is likely corrupted. Replacement of the control board with the correct Ruud part number is required and should be done by a technician.
