Possible Causes
Failed ECM blower motor module, Open blower harness, Faulty indoor control board blower output, Seized blower wheel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the air handler/furnace at the breaker. The blower compartment may contain sharp metal edges; wear gloves.
- Step 1 – Check blower wheel movement: Remove the blower access panel. Try spinning the blower wheel by hand. It should rotate freely without scraping. If seized or rubbing, remove debris and realign or replace the wheel.
- Step 2 – Inspect wiring harness: Locate the ECM motor and its multi-pin harness. Ensure the plug is fully seated and wires are not pinched or damaged.
- Step 3 – Verify power to motor: With power restored and a call for fan or cooling, a technician can check for proper line voltage at the motor and low-voltage control signals from the Ruud control board.
- Step 4 – Replace ECM motor if needed: If the motor receives correct power and signals but does not run, the ECM module or motor is likely failed and must be replaced as an assembly.
