Possible Causes
Clogged condensate drain line, Full condensate pump reservoir, Stuck or failed float switch, Improper drain trap or slope
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the indoor unit before working around water and electrical components.
- Step 1 – Locate float switch: Many Ruud air handlers have a float switch in the primary drain pan or in the drain line. Identify the switch and its wiring.
- Step 2 – Clear standing water: Use a wet/dry vacuum or towels to remove water from the drain pan. If a condensate pump is used, ensure its discharge line is not kinked or blocked.
- Step 3 – Clean drain line: At the outside termination of the PVC drain, use a wet/dry vacuum to suck out sludge and algae. At the air handler, remove the cleanout cap and flush the line with warm water and a small amount of vinegar or approved coil cleaner.
- Step 4 – Test float switch: With the pan dry, the float should drop and close the circuit. Check continuity across the switch with a multimeter. Replace if it remains open when down.
- Step 5 – Restore power and test: After clearing the drain and verifying the float switch, restore power and run the system. Monitor for proper drainage.
