Possible Causes
Seized blower wheel or bearings, Obstructed ductwork causing high static pressure, Shorted blower motor windings, Incorrect motor tap or programming
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker. Blower assemblies are heavy; support them properly when removing.
- Step 1 – Inspect blower wheel: Remove blower access panel and check for debris, insulation, or objects lodged in the wheel. Clean thoroughly.
- Step 2 – Check wheel and motor bearings: Spin the wheel by hand. If it grinds or stops quickly, bearings may be failing. Replace the blower motor or assembly as needed.
- Step 3 – Verify duct and filter condition: Ensure filters are clean and ducts/registers are not blocked. Excessive static pressure can overload the motor.
- Step 4 – Motor wiring/programming: For multi-speed or ECM motors, verify the correct speed tap or program is selected per Ruud installation instructions. Incorrect settings can cause overcurrent.
- Step 5 – Technician testing: If F5 persists, a technician should measure motor amp draw and compare to nameplate rating, then replace the motor if overloaded or shorted.
