Ruud air conditioner (heat pump) shows H2; unit may not switch correctly between heating and cooling.

Safety first: Turn off power at the disconnect. Reversing valve issues involve refrigerant; mechanical valve replacement must be done by a licensed technician.

• Step 1 – Listen for valve shift: When switching between heat and cool, you should hear a noticeable whoosh or click from the Ruud outdoor unit. Absence may indicate a stuck valve or dead coil.
• Step 2 – Inspect solenoid coil: Locate the coil on the reversing valve. Check for secure wiring and signs of overheating or cracking.
• Step 3 – Electrical test: A technician can measure coil resistance and verify 24 VAC is present when the thermostat calls for the opposite mode (O/B terminal).
• Step 4 – Coil replacement: If the coil is open or shorted, it can usually be replaced without opening the refrigerant circuit.
• Step 5 – Valve replacement: If the valve is mechanically stuck or leaking internally, a technician must recover refrigerant, replace the valve, evacuate, and recharge the system.
