Possible Causes
Improperly sized or installed drain trap, Negative pressure in mechanical room pulling air through drain, Long horizontal drain run without proper slope, Undersized or failing condensate pump
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the indoor unit before working on the drain system.
- Step 1 – Verify trap configuration: Ensure the PVC drain trap is installed per Ruud’s installation manual, with correct depth and orientation.
- Step 2 – Check for air leaks: Seal any gaps around the drain connection to the pan that could allow air to be pulled through the drain.
- Step 3 – Confirm slope: Adjust hangers so the drain line slopes continuously downward at least 1/8 inch per foot.
- Step 4 – Condensate pump: If a pump is used, verify it activates and discharges water properly. Replace if intermittent or noisy.
- Step 5 – Re-test float switch: After corrections, ensure the float switch only opens when water level is truly high.
