Possible Causes
Algae buildup in PVC drain line, Cracked or rusted primary drain pan, Improperly sloped drain line, Blocked secondary drain outlet
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the indoor unit to avoid electrical hazards around water.
- Step 1 – Inspect drain pan: Remove access panel and look for standing water in the primary pan under the Ruud evaporator coil.
- Step 2 – Clear drain line: Use a wet/dry vacuum at the outside drain termination to suck out debris. Then flush from the air handler side with warm water and a small amount of vinegar.
- Step 3 – Check slope and support: Ensure the PVC drain line slopes continuously downward from the unit to the termination. Add hangers or adjust as needed.
- Step 4 – Secondary drain and safety: If a secondary drain pan and float switch are present, ensure the secondary line is clear and the float switch is functioning.
- Step 5 – Pan repair or replacement: If the primary pan is cracked or rusted through, the coil assembly may need to be removed and the pan replaced by a technician.
