Outdoor unit does not start; indoor unit may show E5 after a short delay.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: This error often involves high voltage and compressor circuits. Turn off the outdoor unit breaker and do not touch any components until capacitors have discharged. If you are not experienced with high-voltage work, call a technician.
- Visual inspection: Remove the outdoor unit service panel. Look for burnt wires, melted connectors, or scorch marks on the PCB and compressor terminals.
- Check wiring tightness: With power off, tighten all terminal screws for L, N, and compressor/fan outputs. Loose connections can cause overheating and overcurrent trips.
- Fan motor check: Spin the outdoor fan by hand. It should move freely. A seized fan can overload the system. Replace the outdoor fan motor if stiff or noisy.
- Compressor condition: If the compressor shell is discolored or there is a burnt smell, the compressor may be shorted. This requires professional replacement and refrigerant handling.
- Power module (IPM): If the PCB shows visible damage around the inverter module, the IPM is likely failed. Replacement should be done by an authorized Sharp technician.
