Possible Causes
Dead batteries in remote, Obstructed IR receiver on indoor unit, Faulty remote control, Failed IR receiver board on indoor unit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: No high-voltage work is needed for basic checks; unplug unit only if opening covers.
- Replace batteries: Install fresh, correctly oriented batteries in the SMEG remote.
- Check IR path: Ensure there is a clear line of sight between remote and indoor unit; clean the receiver window on the unit.
- Test remote: Point the remote at a smartphone camera; pressing buttons should show a flashing light on the camera screen. If not, the remote may be faulty.
- Check receiver board: If the remote works but the unit does not respond, the IR receiver/display board inside the indoor unit may need replacement.
Most SMEG models also have a manual ON/OFF button under the front panel for emergency operation.
