Possible Causes

Dirty or blocked outdoor condenser coil, Failed or stuck condenser fan motor, Overcharged refrigerant system, Blocked or closed liquid line service valve

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power at the outdoor disconnect and indoor breaker before touching the unit. Do not open the sealed refrigerant system yourself; refrigerant work must be done by an EPA-certified technician.

Homeowner checks:

  • 1. Clean the outdoor coil: Remove leaves, grass, and debris from around the Tempstar condenser. Gently hose the coil from the inside out (after removing the top fan assembly if accessible and safe) to clear dirt. Do not bend fins.
  • 2. Verify condenser fan operation: Restore power and call for cooling. Observe the outdoor unit: the fan should start within a few seconds of the compressor. If the compressor hums but the fan does not spin, shut power off immediately to avoid damage.
  • 3. Check airflow clearance: Ensure at least 2–3 feet of clearance around the unit and no obstructions above it. Poor airflow can cause high head pressure and trigger E1.
  • 4. Reset the system: After cleaning and ensuring airflow, turn power off for 5 minutes, then back on. Clear the thermostat call and re-call for cooling.
  • 5. If E1 returns: The system may be overcharged, have a stuck expansion device, or a failing compressor. These require gauges and professional tools; contact a Tempstar-qualified HVAC technician.
