Possible Causes
Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Restricted indoor evaporator coil, Clogged air filter causing coil freeze, Faulty low-pressure switch or sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Shut off power at the breaker before removing indoor panels. Do not attempt to add refrigerant or repair leaks yourself.
Basic homeowner steps:
- 1. Check and replace air filter: Locate the return air filter in the air handler or return grille. Replace if dirty or clogged. A restricted filter can cause the evaporator to freeze and trigger low-pressure protection.
- 2. Inspect evaporator coil: With power off, remove the access panel to view the Tempstar evaporator coil. If it is iced over, leave the system OFF and fan ON for several hours to melt ice. Do not chip ice off with tools.
- 3. Ensure all supply and return vents are open: Closed vents reduce airflow and can cause coil freeze and low-pressure faults.
- 4. After thawing: Once the coil is fully thawed and the filter is replaced, restore power and run cooling. Monitor for E2 recurrence.
- 5. If E2 returns quickly: The system may be low on refrigerant or have a faulty low-pressure switch. This requires leak detection and charging by a licensed HVAC technician.
