Possible Causes

Broken communication wire between indoor and outdoor units, Faulty outdoor control board, Incorrect dip switch or configuration settings, Blown low-voltage fuse on indoor board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power to both indoor and outdoor units.

Checks:

  • 1. Inspect communication cable: Trace the low-voltage cable from the indoor Tempstar air handler to the outdoor condenser. Look for cuts, rodent damage, or splices that may have failed.
  • 2. Verify terminal connections: At both indoor and outdoor control boards, ensure the communication terminals (often labeled C, D, 1, 2 or similar depending on model) are tight and wires are not crossed.
  • 3. Check indoor board fuse: Confirm the low-voltage fuse is intact. Replace only with the same rating if blown, and investigate for shorts if it blows again.
  • 4. Power cycle: Turn power back on, wait 5–10 minutes for boards to boot and re-establish communication, then call for cooling.
  • 5. If E5 remains: The outdoor control board or indoor board may be defective. Board replacement and configuration should be done by a Tempstar-trained technician.
