Possible Causes
Failed ECM or PSC blower motor, Blower wheel jammed with debris, Failed blower capacitor (for PSC motors), Loose blower wiring harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power to the air handler at the breaker. Blower compartments may have sharp metal edges.
Steps:
- 1. Access blower compartment: Remove the lower front panel of the Tempstar air handler or furnace to expose the blower assembly.
- 2. Inspect blower wheel: Check for insulation, plastic, or other debris lodged in the wheel. Remove obstructions carefully.
- 3. Spin blower by hand: The wheel should spin freely. If it is stiff or scraping, the motor bearings or housing alignment may be bad.
- 4. Check wiring harness: Ensure the multi-pin connector to the ECM motor or individual wires to a PSC motor are firmly seated and not burned.
- 5. Restore power and test: Set thermostat fan to ON. If the blower does not run or starts then stops with E8, the motor or its control module is likely defective.
- 6. Motor replacement: Replacing an ECM blower motor requires matching Tempstar part numbers and programming in some cases; have a professional perform this repair.
