Possible Causes
Outdoor fan motor failure or blockage, Dirty outdoor condenser coil, Overcurrent due to high head pressure, Faulty outdoor main PCB current sensing circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Shut off power at the outdoor disconnect before working on the outdoor unit.
- Inspect outdoor fan: Remove the top grille if needed and check that the fan spins freely by hand with power off. Clear any debris (leaves, plastic, branches) blocking the blades.
- Check fan operation: Restore power and start cooling. Confirm the outdoor fan starts promptly and runs smoothly. If it hums but does not start, the fan motor may be seized or its capacitor (if separate) may be bad.
- Clean condenser coil: With power off, use a garden hose (low pressure) to rinse dirt from the coil fins from inside out. Avoid bending fins.
- Reset and test: After cleaning and clearing obstructions, power cycle the system and test again.
- If E3 persists: The outdoor PCB may be detecting overcurrent from a failing compressor or a faulty current sensor. A technician should measure compressor amperage and replace the outdoor PCB or compressor as needed.
