Possible Causes

Dirty outdoor condenser coil, Blocked condenser airflow, Overcharged refrigerant, Faulty high-pressure switch

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the outdoor disconnect and indoor breaker. Do not attempt to open the refrigerant circuit yourself; refrigerant work must be done by an EPA-certified technician.

  • Clean the condenser coil: Remove debris, leaves, and grass clippings from around the Trane outdoor unit. Remove the top grille if needed (after power is off) and gently hose the coil from the inside out using low water pressure. Avoid bending fins.
  • Check airflow clearance: Ensure at least 18–24 inches of clearance around the unit and 4–5 feet above. Remove any shrubs, lattice, or stored items blocking airflow.
  • Inspect condenser fan operation: Restore power and briefly run the unit. Confirm the condenser fan motor starts promptly and spins at normal speed. If the fan does not run or is slow, shut power off again; a failed fan motor or capacitor can cause high head pressure.
  • Reset high-pressure switch: Some Trane models have a manual reset high-pressure switch accessible under the service panel. With power off, press the reset button if present. Do not repeatedly reset without addressing the cause.

If the E1 code returns after cleaning and verifying fan operation, a technician should check refrigerant charge, high-pressure switch function, and system pressures.
