Possible Causes
Failed contactor coil, Broken low-voltage wire to outdoor unit, Blown low-voltage fuse on indoor board, Faulty thermostat output
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to both indoor and outdoor units before accessing wiring.
- Check low-voltage fuse: Inspect the 3–5A blade fuse on the indoor Trane control board. Replace if blown, but look for shorts in thermostat or outdoor wiring.
- Inspect thermostat cable: At the outdoor unit, verify the Y and C wires are securely connected and not corroded or broken.
- Test contactor manually: With power on and extreme caution, press the contactor plunger with an insulated tool. If the compressor and fan start, the contactor coil is not being energized or is open.
- Thermostat check: Bypass the thermostat by temporarily connecting R to Y at the indoor control board. If the outdoor unit starts, the thermostat or its wiring is suspect.
Replace the contactor or repair low-voltage wiring as needed. If unsure, have a Trane technician perform the diagnosis.
