Possible Causes
Thermostat stuck in call for cooling, Shorted Y wire to R, Stuck contactor, Faulty control board relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before inspecting wiring or contactors.
- Thermostat test: Remove the thermostat from its base. If the outdoor unit continues to run, the issue is not the thermostat.
- Check contactor: Inspect the contactor in the outdoor unit. If the contacts are welded closed, the unit will run continuously. Replace the contactor.
- Inspect wiring: Look for a short between R and Y in the thermostat cable or at the control board.
If the system only stops when the breaker is turned off, have a Trane technician check the control board and wiring thoroughly.
