Trane Normal Condensation vs. Abnormal Outdoor Coil Frost Melt

Water dripping from the Trane outdoor unit base or excessive water around the pad.

Possible Causes

Normal condensation runoff, Defrost water from heat pump, Blocked base pan drain holes, Excessive icing due to low charge or airflow issues

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Be cautious of slippery surfaces around the unit. Turn off power before clearing any obstructions.

  • Inspect base pan: Look under the unit for standing water. Clear debris from drain holes in the base pan.
  • Check for ice: If the coil is icing heavily, turn the system off and allow it to thaw. Then address airflow (filter, coil cleanliness) and have a technician check refrigerant charge.
  • Monitor: A small amount of water is normal, especially in humid conditions. Large, continuous puddles may indicate a problem.

If icing or heavy water persists, schedule a Trane technician to evaluate system operation.
