Possible Causes
Failed defrost thermistor, sensor not in correct position on coil, wiring damage, outdoor PCB defrost circuit failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the breaker before servicing the outdoor unit.
Steps:
- Locate defrost sensor: It is usually clipped to the outdoor coil in the lower section where frost accumulates.
- Check position: Ensure the sensor is in contact with the coil fins or tube, not hanging in free air.
- Inspect wiring: Look for damage from ice expansion or vibration. Repair or replace as needed.
- Replace sensor: Install the correct Westinghouse defrost/coil sensor if faulty.
- PCB check: If F5 persists, the defrost control on the outdoor PCB may be defective and should be replaced by a technician.
