Possible Causes

Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, sensor dislodged from evaporator coil, damaged sensor harness, failed main control board input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before opening the unit. Sharp metal edges around the coil can cause cuts; wear gloves.

Steps to address E2:

  • Reset power: Unplug for 5–10 minutes, then reconnect to see if the code clears.
  • Access the evaporator: Remove the front grille and air filter. Take off the front cover to expose the indoor (evaporator) coil.
  • Locate the evaporator sensor: It is usually clipped to the evaporator coil tubing or fins, connected by two small wires to the control board.
  • Check sensor placement: Ensure the sensor is firmly clipped to the coil. If it has fallen away, reattach it in the original position so it senses coil temperature correctly.
  • Inspect wiring and connector: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Look for cuts, pinches, or corrosion. Reseat the connector.
  • Test resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to Whirlpool specifications (typically similar to the room sensor; around 8–15 kΩ at 77°F). Replace if open, shorted, or far out of spec.
  • Replace sensor if needed: Install a new evaporator temperature sensor, routing the wires away from sharp edges and moving parts.
  • Reassemble and test: Refit covers and filter, restore power, and run the unit. Confirm that E2 does not reappear.

Note: If the sensor tests good and wiring is intact, the main control board may be faulty and should be evaluated by a professional.
