Possible Causes
Open or shorted outdoor coil thermistor, sensor not attached to coil, damaged wiring, failed outdoor PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the breaker. Outdoor units contain high-voltage components.
Steps:
- Remove the outdoor unit service panel.
- Locate the outdoor coil sensor clipped to the condenser/heat pump coil.
- Inspect for physical damage and secure attachment to the coil.
- Test resistance with a multimeter and compare to Whirlpool specifications.
- Replace the outdoor coil sensor if readings are out of range.
If F3 persists with a good sensor, the outdoor control board may be defective and should be replaced by a professional.
