Whirlpool Defrost Mode Active / Low Outdoor Coil Temperature

Whirlpool heat pump air conditioner shows H1 and may run a defrost cycle or stop heating temporarily.

Possible Causes

Normal defrost operation in cold weather, outdoor coil heavily frosted, outdoor sensor reading low temperature

Note: H1 on many Whirlpool heat pump models is an informational code indicating defrost mode, not a fault.

What to do:

Allow the unit to complete the defrost cycle. Heating will resume automatically.
Ensure the outdoor unit is not buried in snow or blocked by ice or debris.
Keep the area around the outdoor coil clear to allow proper airflow.

If H1 remains constantly and heating performance is poor, have a technician check the defrost sensor and control logic.
