Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Dirty condenser coil, Failed condenser fan motor, High ambient temperature causing overheat, Faulty compressor thermal protector or wiring

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit. The compressor and condenser area can be very hot; allow it to cool before touching.

  • Check installation: Ensure the exhaust hose (portable units) is not kinked or blocked and that the hot air is vented outdoors. Maintain at least the manufacturer‑specified clearance around the unit.
  • Clean condenser coil: Remove the rear panel to access the condenser coil. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint from the fins. Do not bend the fins.
  • Verify condenser fan operation: With panels temporarily reinstalled for safety, plug in and run the unit. Observe through the grille that the condenser fan starts and runs at full speed when cooling is selected. If the fan does not run, shuts off, or is very slow, unplug and inspect the condenser fan motor and capacitor (if used).
  • Inspect fan blades: Check for obstructions, broken blades, or anything rubbing the fan. Clear obstructions and tighten loose fan hubs.
  • Electrical checks (advanced): With power disconnected, inspect wiring to the compressor and overload protector. Look for burnt connectors or melted insulation. Replace the compressor overload protector or wiring harness if damaged.
  • Allow cool‑down: After cleaning and verifying airflow, let the unit sit unplugged for 30–60 minutes to allow the compressor to cool and the overload to reset, then test again.
  • Professional service: If E5 persists and the fan and airflow are normal, the compressor itself may be failing or drawing excessive current. This requires a licensed HVAC technician to diagnose and replace the compressor or related components.
