Steps to improve safety:

Check placement: Ensure adequate clearance around the air fryer and do not place it under low cabinets while operating.
Inspect vents and fan: Clean vents and verify fan operation as described in fan-related entries.
Open housing: Remove covers to inspect internal heat shields and insulation around the cooking chamber. Look for missing, burnt, or displaced reflective shields.
Replace shields: Install new heat shield / insulation panels if the originals are damaged or missing.
Test again: After reassembly, run a short cycle and monitor exterior temperature. Some warmth is normal, but surfaces should not be dangerously hot.
