Air fryer will not start and displays E1 on the control panel.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the Breville air fryer and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels. Never work on a live appliance.
- Power reset: Unplug the unit for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in and try again. Sometimes E1 is a transient sensor read error.
- Access the sensor: Remove the rear or bottom cover (depending on model) to locate the cabinet temperature sensor (NTC) clipped to the inner metal wall near the heating element or exhaust area.
- Check wiring: Inspect the thin sensor wires from the NTC to the main control board for breaks, pinches, or melted insulation. Reseat the connector firmly on the control board.
- Test the sensor: Using a multimeter set to resistance (ohms), measure across the NTC leads. A typical NTC will show a finite resistance (often 10k–100kΩ at room temperature). If it reads open (OL) or 0Ω, the sensor is defective.
- Replace if faulty: If the sensor is open or physically damaged, replace the cabinet temperature sensor (NTC). Transfer any clips or brackets from the old sensor to the new one and route the wires away from hot or sharp surfaces.
- Inspect control board connector: If the sensor tests good, inspect the control board socket for discoloration or burned pins. Clean lightly and reseat; if badly burned, the main control board may need replacement.
If E1 persists after sensor replacement and wiring checks, discontinue use and consult a qualified technician.
