Burn-In of Manufacturing Residues
Air fryer emits a strong chemical or paint-like odor on first few uses.

Possible Causes
Protective oils on heating element, Residual coatings on interior surfaces, New plastic components off-gassing, Packaging residue left inside
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure good ventilation during initial uses. If the smell is extremely strong or accompanied by smoke from the housing, stop using the unit.
Steps to minimize new-appliance odor:
- 1. Clean before first use: Wash the basket and crisper tray with warm, soapy water. Wipe the interior cavity with a damp cloth and dry.
- 2. Perform an empty burn-in: Run the air fryer empty at 375–400°F for 10–15 minutes, then allow it to cool. Repeat once or twice if needed.
- 3. Ventilate: Operate the unit near an open window or under a range hood during the first few cycles.
- 4. Inspect for packaging: Confirm that all plastic films, zip ties, and cardboard pieces have been removed from inside and around the heater area.
Note: A mild odor is normal for the first few uses. Persistent strong chemical smells after multiple burn-in cycles may indicate a defect; contact Hamilton Beach support.
