Possible Causes
Blocked rear exhaust vents, Failed or stuck high-limit thermostat, Fan motor not running causing heat buildup, Control board temperature regulation failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the air fryer and let it cool completely. Do not bypass any safety thermostats.
Steps to troubleshoot E3:
- 1. Check installation and ventilation: Make sure the Hamilton Beach air fryer is on a hard, heat‑resistant surface with at least 4–6 inches of clearance on all sides and above. Remove any items blocking the rear exhaust grill.
- 2. Clean grease and debris: Excess grease buildup can trap heat. Remove the basket and crisper tray and clean them thoroughly. Wipe the interior cavity and especially the area around the heater and fan with a damp cloth (unit unplugged and cool). Do not spray cleaner directly into the heater area.
- 3. Listen for the fan: Plug in the unit and start a low‑temperature cycle. If the fan does not start or sounds weak, unplug immediately. A non‑running fan will cause rapid overheating and E3 errors.
- 4. Inspect the high‑limit thermostat: With the back or bottom panel removed (unplugged), locate the small round or oval thermostat disc mounted near the heater. Check for loose wires or signs of overheating. Some thermostats are manual‑reset (small button in the center); if present, press gently to reset.
- 5. Test continuity (advanced): Use a multimeter to check continuity across the high‑limit thermostat at room temperature. It should read closed (near 0 Ω). If it is open and does not reset, replace the thermostat.
- 6. Evaluate the control board: If the fan and thermostat are good but E3 persists, the control board may be misreading temperature or driving the heater continuously. Inspect for burnt components and consider replacement.
Warning: Never bypass or short the high‑limit thermostat. It is a critical safety device to prevent fire.
