Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the air fryer immediately and allow it to cool for at least 45–60 minutes. Overheating can be a fire hazard.
- Check ventilation: Ensure there is at least 5 inches (12 cm) of clearance around all sides and above the air fryer. Do not operate it under low cabinets or in enclosed spaces. Clear any obstructions from the rear and side vents.
- Clean the heating area: Remove the basket and tray. Inspect the heating element and surrounding area for heavy grease or carbon buildup. Clean with a soft brush and a damp cloth with mild detergent. Do not spray cleaner directly onto the element; apply to the cloth first.
- Inspect the fan: Look through the top or rear grill to ensure the fan spins freely. If you hear scraping or see debris, unplug and remove the cover to clear obstructions.
- Reset attempt: After full cooling and cleaning, plug the unit back in and run at a low temperature (e.g., 300°F/150°C) for a short test. If E3 reappears quickly, an internal thermostat or control board fault is likely.
- Advanced check: With the cover removed (unplugged), locate the overheat thermostat or thermal cutoff near the heater. Check for discoloration or signs of overheating. Some thermostats are resettable; others are one‑time fuses that must be replaced if open.
- If the overheat device is open: Replace the overheat thermostat or thermal fuse with the exact rating specified for your Instant Pot model. If it trips repeatedly, the main control board or fan may be defective and should be inspected.
If you are not comfortable opening the unit, discontinue use and contact a qualified technician or Instant Brands support.
