Possible Causes
Blocked air intake or exhaust vents, Failed high-limit thermostat, Faulty temperature sensor (NTC probe), Control board misreading temperature
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the air fryer and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before any inspection. Never work on the unit while it is hot or connected to power.
- Step 1 – Allow full cool-down: Remove the basket and cooking pot. Let the unit sit on a heat-resistant surface until the housing is completely cool to the touch. Try restarting after cooling; brief overheat events can self-clear.
- Step 2 – Check airflow paths: Inspect the rear and underside air intake and exhaust vents. Remove any dust, grease buildup, or obstructions using a soft brush and a vacuum. Ensure there is at least 5 inches (12 cm) of clearance around the unit when operating.
- Step 3 – Clean interior: Remove any burnt-on food or grease from the heating chamber, especially around the heating element and temperature sensor probe (usually a small metal rod or stud near the element). Use a damp cloth and mild detergent; do not spray cleaner directly into the unit.
- Step 4 – Inspect high-limit thermostat (advanced): With the unit unplugged, remove the top or rear cover (if you are comfortable and this does not void warranty). Locate the high-limit thermostat near the heating element. Check for obvious damage or discoloration. A failed thermostat will often be open-circuit; testing requires a multimeter and should be done by a qualified technician.
- Step 5 – Power reset: After cleaning and cooling, plug the unit back in, select a low temperature (e.g., 300°F / 150°C), and start a short test cycle. If E01 reappears immediately, the temperature sensor or control board is likely faulty.
- When to stop: If the error persists after cleaning and ensuring proper ventilation, discontinue use. Overheat faults can be a fire risk and should be evaluated by a professional or Ninja support.
