Possible Causes

New unit curing smell from protective coatings, Plastic parts too close to heating element, Melted wire insulation from loose connection, Grease buildup burning on heater guard

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: If you see smoke or the smell is strong and persistent, unplug the unit immediately and do not continue using it until inspected.

  • Initial burn-in: For a new fryer, run it empty at 400°F (200°C) for 10–15 minutes with good ventilation to burn off manufacturing residues. A mild odor is normal initially.
  • Inspect interior: After cooling, check for any plastic packaging, zip ties, or labels left inside near the heater. Remove any foreign objects.
  • Clean heater area: Remove grease and food residue from the heater guard and walls with a non-abrasive cleaner. Grease can produce a burnt smell.
  • Internal inspection (advanced): Remove the rear/bottom cover and inspect wiring near the heater for melted insulation or darkened connectors. Tighten or replace any overheated connectors and replace damaged wiring with high-temperature-rated wire.
  • Check plastic clearances: Ensure no warped plastic panels are touching the heater. If the heater has deformed nearby plastic, the unit may be unsafe and should be evaluated by a technician.
