Possible Causes
Grease on heating element burning off, New‑unit protective coatings curing, Melting wire insulation near heater, Failing fan or heater connections arcing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you smell strong burning plastic or see smoke, unplug immediately. Do not leave the unit unattended.
- New unit break‑in: For a new Salter air fryer, run it empty at 200°C for 10–15 minutes in a well‑ventilated area to burn off manufacturing residues. Mild odor is normal initially.
- Clean element and cavity: For older units, remove the basket and clean grease from the heater, fan guard, and interior surfaces with a non‑abrasive cleaner. Avoid soaking electrical parts.
- Inspect wiring: If the smell is plastic or electrical, open the housing and inspect wiring near the heater and PCB for melted insulation or discoloration. Replace any damaged wires and connectors.
- Check connectors: Loose spade connectors can arc and overheat. Tighten or replace any that show signs of burning.
- Test under supervision: After repairs and cleaning, run the unit for a short period while monitoring closely. If the smell persists or worsens, discontinue use and seek professional service.
