Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit immediately. An E5 fault can indicate a short circuit that may pose a fire or shock hazard.
Initial checks:
- Inspect power cord: Check the T-fal air fryer power cord for cuts, burns, or crushed sections. Replace the cord set if damaged.
- Check for burning smell: Remove the basket and smell inside the cavity. A strong burnt odor may indicate a shorted heater or wiring.
Internal inspection (advanced):
- Remove the housing to access the heater, fan motor, and wiring harness.
- Look for melted insulation, blackened connectors, or wires touching the metal chassis.
- Disconnect the heater and fan motor one at a time from the control board, then power up briefly (with extreme caution) to see if E5 appears. This helps isolate which load is shorted.
- Test the heating element and fan motor with a multimeter for resistance to chassis ground. A very low resistance indicates a short.
- Inspect the main control PCB for burned components in the power supply area (near the AC input, rectifier, or large capacitors).
Replace any shorted component (heater, fan motor, or wiring harness) with genuine or compatible T-fal parts. If the control board is visibly damaged, replacement is recommended rather than repair.
