Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the Whirlpool air fryer from the wall outlet before removing any panels. Allow the unit to cool completely.
Steps to check the temperature sensor:
- Remove the cooking basket and drawer to access internal screws (usually around the front lip or underside). Carefully remove the outer housing as per the user manual.
- Locate the cavity temperature sensor (NTC) near the heating element or at the top/side of the cooking chamber. It typically looks like a small metal probe or bulb with two wires leading to the control board.
- Inspect the sensor wiring harness for loose connectors, broken insulation, or burnt spots. Reseat any loose plug firmly into the control board.
- Using a multimeter set to resistance (ohms), measure the sensor across its two terminals. A typical NTC will show a finite resistance (often 5–200 kΩ at room temperature). If it reads OL (open) or 0 Ω (short), the sensor is faulty.
- If the sensor is open or physically damaged, replace it with a Whirlpool-compatible cavity temperature sensor. Route the new sensor wiring away from the heating element and secure with high-temperature clips or ties.
- If the sensor tests good but E1 persists, the temperature input circuit on the main control board may be defective and the board will likely need replacement.
When to stop: If you are not comfortable disassembling the housing or working with a multimeter, stop and contact a qualified appliance technician.
