Possible Causes

Improper LWCO installation height, Foaming or sludge in boiler water, Loose LWCO probe connection, Faulty LWCO electronics

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power. Low water cutoffs are safety devices; do not bypass them.

  • Step 1 – Verify system pressure: Confirm that the pressure gauge shows normal operating pressure when the LWCO trips. If pressure is low, address fill issues.
  • Step 2 – Inspect LWCO probe: On probe-type LWCOs, isolate and drain the boiler to below the probe. Remove the probe and clean any scale or sludge from the tip. Reinstall with proper sealing.
  • Step 3 – Check wiring: Ensure the LWCO wiring to the control is tight and not corroded.
  • Step 4 – Water quality (pro): Excessive foaming due to poor water quality can cause false trips. A professional may recommend flushing and treating the system water.
  • Step 5 – Replace LWCO if faulty: If trips continue with proper water level and clean probe, replace the low water cutoff with a Bradford White-approved model.

Note: The LWCO protects against dry firing; never operate the boiler with it bypassed.
