Possible Causes

Failed expansion tank, Overfilling by pressure reducing valve, Overheating due to flow issues, Debris on relief valve seat

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: The discharge pipe may be hot. Do not cap or plug the relief valve outlet.

  • Check system pressure: Read the gauge when the system is cold and hot. If pressure rises above 25–30 psi when hot, the expansion tank may be waterlogged.
  • Test expansion tank: Tap the tank; it should sound hollow on top and solid at the bottom. If it feels full of water, it may need to be drained or replaced.
  • Inspect fill valve: Ensure the pressure reducing valve is not stuck open and that the manual bypass (if present) is closed.
  • Cycle relief valve: Briefly lift the test lever to flush debris from the seat, then release. If it continues to drip, replacement is recommended.
