Possible Causes
Leaking radiator or pipework, faulty pressure relief valve, failed expansion vessel, micro-leaks in heat exchanger
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Do not repeatedly overfill the system. This can cause further leaks and corrosion.
- Visual leak check: Inspect all radiators, valves, and visible pipework for signs of water staining or damp patches.
- Check PRV discharge: Look at the pressure relief valve discharge pipe outside. If it is dripping, the pressure relief valve may be passing or the expansion vessel may have failed.
- Isolate boiler: If possible, close the flow and return valves under the boiler overnight. If pressure holds, the leak is in the system; if it drops, the leak is inside the boiler.
- Technician tasks: A professional should test and recharge or replace the expansion vessel, replace a passing PRV, and locate hidden leaks.
