Possible Causes
Overfilled system, failed expansion vessel, leaking filling loop, blocked expansion pipe
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Hot water discharge from the safety valve can cause burns. Allow system to cool before relieving pressure.
- Check filling loop: Ensure the filling loop valves are fully closed and the flexible hose is removed if required by local regulations.
- Reduce pressure: Bleed water from a radiator or drain point until the pressure gauge returns to around 1.2 bar when cold.
- Monitor pressure: If pressure rises rapidly again during heating, the expansion vessel may have lost charge or failed.
- Technician tasks: A heating engineer should check and recharge or replace the expansion vessel and verify the pressure relief valve operation.
