Glow-worm
Partial Circulation / Balancing or Sludge Issue
Radiators upstairs get hot but downstairs remain cold
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Sludge build-up in lower circuit, Pump not powerful enough or on low speed, Incorrect system balancing, Air trapped in downstairs pipework
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Allow system to cool before bleeding radiators. Use cloths to catch any water.
- Bleed downstairs radiators: Air can accumulate in lower radiators if system layout is unusual. Bleed each radiator until water flows steadily.
- Check TRVs: Ensure all downstairs TRVs are fully open and not stuck.
- Balance system: Slightly close lockshield valves on very hot upstairs radiators to encourage more flow downstairs.
- Engineer tasks:
- Assess pump sizing and speed.
- Powerflush the system if sludge is suspected.
Balancing can significantly improve heat distribution without major work.
