Boiler leaking water from underneath the case or pipe connections
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the boiler at the fused spur. If the leak is significant, turn off the mains cold water supply and, for system boilers, isolate the heating flow and return valves. Do not remove the boiler case yourself.
User checks:
- Identify source area (externally): Look under the boiler to see if water is dripping from a copper pipe that terminates outside (pressure relief discharge) or from joints under the boiler.
- Check pressure gauge: If pressure is dropping and you see water from the pressure relief discharge pipe outside, the pressure relief valve may be passing.
- Contain the leak: Place a tray or towel under the boiler to protect flooring.
Do not: Do not cap or block any discharge pipes. Do not open the boiler case.
Engineer tasks: Replace leaking pressure relief valve, automatic air vent, or seals on the Ideal hydraulic manifold; repair or replace the main heat exchanger if leaking; re-pressurise and test the system.
