Possible Causes

Unstable gas supply pressure, Blocked burner or injector, Faulty flame sensor (ionisation electrode), Faulty gas valve modulation

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak, do not attempt any repair. Turn off the gas at the meter, ventilate the area, and call a Gas Safe registered engineer and your gas supplier.

User checks:

  • Check gas supply to property: Confirm other gas appliances (e.g. hob) work. If not, there may be a supply issue.
  • Reset the boiler: Turn the boiler off, wait 5 minutes, then turn it back on and press the reset button. Observe if F2 reappears.
  • Check condensate pipe (in freezing weather): A partially frozen condensate pipe can cause intermittent flame loss. See F2/FL condensate guidance if applicable.

Engineer-only work (do not attempt yourself):

  • Check and clean the burner and injectors.
  • Test and replace the flame sensor (ionisation electrode) if it is cracked, sooted, or out of position.
  • Check gas valve inlet pressure and combustion settings using a manometer and flue gas analyser.
  • Inspect wiring between the flame sensor and PCB.

If F2 persists after a reset and basic checks, the boiler must be inspected by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
