Possible Causes
Hidden leak in pipework or radiators, Faulty expansion vessel, Weeping pressure relief valve, Micro-leaks in heat exchanger
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Warning: Constantly topping up introduces fresh oxygen and accelerates corrosion. The underlying cause must be fixed.
- Inspect for visible leaks: Check all radiators, valves, and accessible pipes for damp patches or staining.
- Check PRV discharge pipe: Look at the pressure relief valve outlet outside while the boiler is running. Dripping indicates the PRV is passing water.
- Monitor pressure pattern: If pressure rises very high when hot then drops low when cold, the expansion vessel is likely faulty.
- Engineer actions: The engineer will test the expansion vessel charge, replace the vessel if needed, test/replace the PRV, and pressure-test the system for hidden leaks.
