Pump Overrun / Post-Heating Circulation
Boiler shows code 2, pump running but burner off, boiler appears to be in pump overrun or post-purge
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Normal pump overrun after burner operation, High system temperature requiring extra circulation, Incorrect pump overrun setting, Sticking pump causing extended run
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Information: Code 2 on many Intergas boilers indicates pump overrun or post-purge and is usually normal. The pump continues to run to dissipate residual heat and protect the heat exchanger.
- Observe duration: Pump overrun typically lasts a few minutes after the burner stops. If it stops after a short period, this is normal.
- Check system temperature: If the boiler has been running at high temperature, longer overrun is expected. Ensure radiators are hot and circulation is good.
- Listen for noise: If the pump is noisy or running continuously for a very long time (e.g. over 30–60 minutes with no demand), there may be a control or pump issue. Turn off power at the fused spur for 30 seconds, then restore power and observe.
- Check for stuck valves: If you have motorised valves, a stuck valve can cause poor circulation and extended pump running. Have an engineer inspect the system hydraulics.
- Engineer check: If the pump never stops or the boiler overheats, a Gas Safe engineer should test the pump, NTC sensors, and PCB control logic.
