Possible Causes
Unstable gas pressure, partially blocked burner, faulty flame sensor, failing gas valve coil
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Switch off power and close the gas valve before opening the combustion chamber. Allow the boiler to cool.
Steps:
- Check venting and combustion air: Make sure the intake and exhaust pipes (for direct-vent Peerless models) are not blocked by snow, leaves, or nests. Restricted air can cause flame dropout.
- Inspect burner and flame pattern: Remove the burner cover and visually inspect the burner. Look for uneven flame, yellow tips, or lifting flames. Clean burner ports with a soft brush and compressed air.
- Clean flame sensor: Remove the flame rod and clean it with fine abrasive pad. Reinstall ensuring good contact with the burner ground.
- Check wiring to gas valve: Inspect the harness from the control board to the gas valve for loose connectors or heat damage.
- If E2 persists: A technician should measure manifold gas pressure, verify combustion, and possibly replace the gas valve or flame sensor assembly.
