Possible Causes
Failed expansion tank, overfilled system, stuck fill valve, overheating
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Hot water under pressure can cause burns. Allow system to cool before relieving pressure.
Steps:
- Check pressure gauge: If pressure is above relief valve rating (typically 30 psi), shut off the boiler.
- Isolate fill valve: Close the manual feed valve to prevent further filling.
- Test expansion tank: With system pressure relieved, check the air charge on the diaphragm expansion tank using a tire gauge. Recharge or replace if failed.
- Drain excess water: Carefully drain water from a drain valve to bring pressure back to normal.
- Replace faulty fill valve: If the automatic fill valve continues to feed, replace it.
