Possible Causes

Failed expansion tank (waterlogged), Overfilling by automatic fill valve, Overheating due to control fault, Incorrect relief valve rating

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Hot water can cause burns. Keep clear of the relief discharge when the boiler is hot.

Steps:

  • 1. Check system pressure: Read the pressure gauge when the system is cold and hot. If pressure rises excessively when hot, the expansion tank may be failed.
  • 2. Inspect expansion tank: For diaphragm tanks, tap the tank: it should sound hollow on top and solid on bottom. If fully waterlogged, it must be replaced.
  • 3. Check fill valve: Ensure the automatic fill valve is not over-pressurizing the system. A technician can adjust or replace it.

Do not plug or cap the relief valve. If it continues to discharge, have a professional evaluate the system.
