Possible Causes
Leaking expansion vessel diaphragm, Leak in heating pipework or radiators, Leaking pressure relief valve, Micro-leaks inside boiler casing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not repeatedly overfill the system above the recommended pressure. This can cause further damage.
- Check for visible leaks: Inspect all radiators, valves, and accessible pipework for damp patches or staining.
- Check pressure relief valve outlet: Look at the PRV discharge pipe outside. If it drips when the boiler heats up, the PRV may be passing due to expansion vessel issues.
- Monitor pressure pattern: Note if pressure rises very high when hot and drops low when cold; this strongly suggests an expansion vessel problem.
- Engineer tasks: Test and recharge or replace the expansion vessel, replace a passing PRV, and locate and repair any hidden leaks.
